Improved Security as Business Needs Expand Austin, TX — March 17, 2020 — Clarity Ventures announced today that it has released the latest version of a site for its partner MicroGenDX. MicroGenDX is a lead medical lab and testing company that processes lab tests and provides results to patients. During COVID, they dramatically ramped up the volume of tests that they were completing for patients. As a result, they needed an automated system that could handle the added business. That’s when they contacted Clarity. “The rub was that the data, lab results, and testing workflow required doctor approval for some of the tests. Protected health information, or PHI, also had to be collected from the patient. Both of these scenarios meant that the eCommerce platform and any associated portals had to be HIPAA compliant.” The Clarity team leveraged tokenization and customization of MicroGenDX’s existing WooCommerce platform, bolstering the security of WooCommerce at the same time. “Tokenization allowed the HIPAA data to be tokenized and sent to a third-party tokenization vault,” said Chris Reddick, President and CEO of Clarity. “This was only accessible through multiple layers of security within the custom customizations to WooCommerce. WooCommerce itself is not considered to be particularly secure, but it can be hardened and set up in a secure environment.” The project was a collaborative effort among three already existing teams. Clarity provided security recommendations and best practices for the team at MicroGenDX and for their consulting team that was operating their WooCommerce instance. By working together, Clarity was able to extend the WooCommerce application with customized hooks that plugged into the checkout process and handle data fields that were specifically not stored in WooCommerce. Instead, this data is sent immediately to a tokenized vault. This allowed the MicroGenDX team to access the PHI data in a HIPAA compliant way. Clarity is adept at providing HIPAA security standards from start to finish, but for this project this wasn’t necessary.
